I made a test block out of spruce to show a test with my actual building material. One of my theories is that I need to make sure the test blocks are even on the sides and that the center block is a full 1/4 inch higher. I was careful when I glued the block and it has now been the necessary two weeks for the glue to fully cure.

I smashed the middle block over and over and finally had some success with the wood obviously failing before the glue. I am glad I finally got good results. I feel confident now with all the parts I have made so far, and more certain it's been my testing method rather than the glue that has been wrong. I may try another maple test block though. I have finals coming up and still no new wood so I'm still in a holding pattern.
